Enhanced Partnership in Mineral Exploration Formed Between Japan and Zambia
Japan and Zambia Forge Stronger Alliance in Pursuit of Essential Minerals for Electric Vehicles and More”
“The Japanese government has unveiled its intent to bolster its collaboration with Zambia in the search for critical minerals vital for electric vehicles and other essential products.
Economy, Trade, and Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, in conjunction with Zambia’s Mines and Mineral Development Minister Paul Kabuswe, inked a cooperative accord in Lusaka on Friday, solidifying their commitment to advancing cooperation within the mining sector.
Japan’s strategic vision includes bolstering the supply chain for crucial minerals by supporting mine development, a task often laden with challenges. This support will be facilitated through government-led initiatives aimed at encouraging Japanese enterprises to expand their presence in Africa.
The collaborative exploration venture will particularly target copper, a key resource in the south-central African nation, along with other pivotal minerals like cobalt and nickel, crucial components for electric vehicle batteries.
To execute this endeavor, the two nations have agreed to conduct exploration activities across Zambia, utilizing high-performance sensors mounted on Japanese satellites.
During Nishimura’s recent visit to Africa, both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Namibia also expressed willingness to partner with Japan in the exploration of essential minerals and the establishment of robust supply networks.
With China increasing its investments in Africa to secure raw materials, Japan is strategically focused on fostering its investment in Zambia, prioritizing economic security.
In Zambia, a joint public-private mining investment conference drew participation from 11 companies, including Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Nissan Motor Co., and Toyota Tsusho Corp.
Nishimura underscored, “Nations rich in resources are increasingly diversifying their economies and reducing dependency on single partners.” He emphasized the significance of cultivating mutually advantageous relationships through initiatives such as workforce development and ensuring the availability of vital minerals.
